This week's Pop Culture League assignment, in time for October and Halloween, is: Here There Be Monsters
If you don't know it already by reading my blog, I am a big fan of The Walking Dead. I watch the show, collect the figures, and read the comic books.
For those who don't read the comic books, after every 5-6 issues, a compiled trade paperback is released containing those issues. It kind of looks like this:
Volume 1 - Days Gone Bye
What's cool about these trade paperbacks is the zombies at the bottom of each paperback connect to make one continuous horde.
So I had this idea, that I wanted to paint each cover (minus the top part of the photo) and just paint a canvas with each set of zombies and then make all those paintings connect.
So here is the process for how I made Volume 1 and 2. I am using 11x14 canvases.
Continuing on to Volume 3 and 4.
And here they are side by side.
Since the Trade Paperbacks are up to Volume 26, I started Volume 11-20 with an assembly line. Need to finish these up and get the rest done as well.

Wow, nicely done! You're gonna be bummed when next week's challenge is announced (tentatively scheduled to be: The Walking Dead!). ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks Brian! I'm sure I'll come up with something. I was actually thinking of making life size wooden cutouts of some of these zombies and putting them in my yard for Halloween. Hmmmmm....?
DeleteWow! I am a huge fan of the Walking Dead and you sir did an amazing job on this project!
ReplyDeleteThanks. Just need to finish it. 1-10 was done two years ago. 11-20 was started in April and haven't touched it since. Just need to devote an hour each day or a few hours on the weekend while watching football.

Deletebeautifully done. made me think of a song by Tom Smith called "Undead Happy Trees" which I think you would get a kick out of.

ReplyDeleteI really love the way you showed the progression of each piece- I can't draw a straight line unless computer aided, so I really respect what I am seeing there
ReplyDeleteThanks. Appreciate it. Wish I had time to spend more on it. Will have to find the time.
DeleteZombies scare the crap out of me, but great work!
ReplyDeleteThanks Alexis.
